Iconic Danish modern lighting created for the SAS Royal Hotel, Copenhagen
The AJ Floor Lamp was designed in 1960 by architect Arne Jacobsen as part of his total design for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. From furniture and lighting to door handles and tableware, Jacobsen’s vision turned the hotel into one of the most complete expressions of modernist design.
Unlike his earlier organic forms, the AJ series features crisp geometry. The lamp head combines a cylindrical socket housing with a sharply cut conical shade, its edge parallel to the surface below. An integrated tilt mechanism within the cylinder allows easy light direction. The shade’s white interior ensures diffuse, glare-free illumination.
Louis Poulsen remains the exclusive producer of the AJ series.
