Luxus, an internationally acclaimed lamp factory from the very small village Vittsjö, Sweden gained their fame due to the Kristiansson brothers’ fantastic life’s work.
And what a story it is.
Östen was the artist and sculptor and Uno was the skilled entrepreneur. The brothers created together a large collection of lamps and furniture from the early 50s onwards. Many, especially the lamps, have become true design classics that are internationally very sought after at auctions and in the trade. Together they made Luxus an established company on the international map, especially the US was a big market. They alsp had sellers and agents in both, London, Milan and Paris. This was during a time when Scandinavian design had great international success and inspired many interior designers world wide. Something that took also took Östen Kristiansson to the USA, where he worked as a lighting designer towards the end of the 50s.
The company’s manufacturing was initially entirely focused on consumer goods, but eventually the company also focused on lighting in public environments. They worked exclusively with incandescent light, even in public settings, which made them at the time very unique and incredibly beautiful, yet rarely seen in modern environments today.
The quality is visible in the details, there is no doubt that the lamps are handmade. The design ethos throughout all of their the production is very consistent. Östen designed with confidence and the result in the first decades was often powerful, geometric and colorful, preferably in basic colors, without losing finesse and quality. The pendulum swings from very playful to fine-tuned elegance. Early on, the material was mostly acrylic with wooden details, but many lamp versions were also made in matt opal glass with wooden oak fittings.
