The acanthus is a Mediterranean plant whose stylized leaves were a popular decorative motif in ancient Greece and Rome. In the Renaissance, acanthus was the main ornamental motif, and over the following centuries it underwent many stylistic changes – from lush acanthus (from around 1630), through dry (from around 1700) to flaming (after 1725).
